Abstinence Only Education’s Top Spokeswoman Is The Mother Of A Pregnant Teen

2 Sep

Reuters reports that Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol is pregnant, and at age 17 (and not yet graduated from high school) will marry the father and raise the baby.  The bullshit bloggers were spewing was pretty hateful, with this whole “teenage girl gives birth to retarded baby and mother claims it is hers” but I guess it brought out the truth.

So here is my question.  Abstinence only education is suppossed to keep kids from getting pregnant and getting diseases.  Okay, that isn’t really a question.  But here we have an educated, white, wealthy young woman.  You can’t blame this failure on cultural influences.  This isn’t the “Juno” effect.  This is what happens when kids don’t know how to prevent pregnancy OR they think having a baby is something they should do at 17.  So which is it?  I know Obama says he won’t discuss it, and he’s right, nobody wins this press battle.  But at some point we have to ask the question, as sentient American voters — how can a woman advocate no-abortion rights and no sex education and watch joyfully as her 17 year old daughter has a myriad of choices taken away from her due to ignorance.

If a 17 year old isn’t ready to have sex, which is not my view, but the viewpoint of the cultural conservatives HOW IS SHE READY TO RAISE A BABY?

And more importantly how can a modern “feminist” see this as anything other than a failure?

Or as CBS’ Steve Benen said:

That’s nice, but if McCain has his way in office, the choice wouldn’t be up to her at all. Roe would be overturned, and reproductive rights would be dramatically curtailed for every woman in America. Indeed, it’s not just McCain — Sarah Palin told Alaskans during her gubernatorial campaign that she wouldn’t support abortion rights even if her own daughter had been raped. (Palin is also a staunch advocate of abstinence-only education.)

Something to keep in mind.

Exactly! It’s so inconsistent! I mean, pick one – if you’re going to advocate for no abortion, then at least teach girls how to avoid getting pregnant. What is wrong with a little education, for pete’s sake?
